How much do you think the following suggestions should be our focus in our NHS campaign?
1. Campaign for local GPs to use their new powers to protect the NHS

Andrew Lansley has put groups of GPs, called Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) in charge of huge decisions about spending on local healthcare.
We could:
-
Organise local petitions and events
asking CCGs to take a stand against privatisation
-
Hire lawyers to help write policies
to allow CCGs to make the NHS their 'preferred provider'
-
Organise support for pro-NHS CCGs
being pressurised by government or private companies
2. Campaign if and when things start to go wrong in a specific local area, by sounding the alarm and calling for a change of plans

We could organise campaigns focusing on specific areas where services are getting worse or being privatised, or where a private company is ripping off the taxpayer.
That could include:
-
Local petitions
and demonstrations
- Providing
support for local campaigners
-
Bringing national attention
to put pressure on the government to fix the problems
3. Create a people-powered NHS watchdog

Local bodies have been created to ensure the NHS is doing its work properly. These include HealthWatch boards, Patient Participation Groups, Foundation Trust Governors and CCGs.
We could:
-
Train 38 Degrees members involved with these groups
through events, or monthly conference calls
- Help people who 'whistleblow':
expose dodgy practices
happening behind closed doors.
4. Build up a national picture of how cuts and privatisation are impacting on the NHS

We could:
-
Pay for investigators
to do Freedom of Information requests or undercover investigations
-
Train members to do their own local investigations
into problems they find out about
- Create an online database to
get all the information about problems with the NHS together
5. Deter private companies from encroaching on the NHS

We could:
-
Lift the lid on corporate healthcare sponsorship
of NHS events or public events like the London Marathon
-
Organise stunts or protests
at shareholder events or outside companies' offices
-
Support NHS providers
if private companies try to challenge them in the courts
-
Expose dodgy dealings
or conflicts of interest
6. Make the NHS an issue in elections

We could make sure politicians who want to win elections have to take a stand and pledge to protect the NHS.
This might involve
asking local candidates how they'll stand up for the NHS
, or
supporting pro-NHS candidates
.
7. Help NHS staff who’ve lost their jobs by advising on how to set up alternative organisations to compete with management consultants and big companies
A lot

We could:
-
Make sure big private companies aren’t the only alternative
to NHS service providers
-
Help ex-NHS staff
set up mutuals or co-ops to compete for business
-
Make sure CCGs consider these not-for-profit alternatives
when choosing providers
