Demand a cleaner Energy Bill
|
The Government promised that new laws on energy would put tackling climate change first. But now, the Energy Bill could be passed this month with no standards for the carbon emissions of new, ‘clean’ power stations. We’re taking action alongside Friend of the Earth, Greenpeace, WWF, RSPB and others to call for a better law. E-mail your MP now in 2 minutes to tell them to support adding proper standards for new power stations to the Bill. At the moment, energy companies are looking forward to a big chunk of money to build new, carbon capture power stations, which burn fossil fuels but pump their carbon emissions underground. Because these new power stations aren’t profitable yet, we’ll be paying millions of pounds to the big power companies to help build them, through a ‘levy’ on our bills.. But despite getting so much money from consumers, energy companies aren’t under any pressure to make sure that the power stations actually work in making big reductions to carbon emissions. Now, some MPs are calling for an addition to the Energy Bill to make sure that energy companies keep their side of the bargain. Write to your MP now in two minutes and ask them to vote to support an Emissions Performance Standard – a bit like a ‘miles per gallon’ measure for power stations – when the Energy Bill is debated.
