Oppose World Bank loan for coal plant

To send your letter just click the "Get Started" button below

On 8 April, the UK is expected to vote in favour of a $3.75 billion World Bank loan to energy giant Eskom to fund the Medupi coal-fired power plant in South Africa. If the project goes ahead, Medupi would be the fourth-largest power plant in the world. Please email Douglas Alexander and Ed Miliband now, urging the UK to vote against the loan.

The plant would release 25 million tonnes of CO2 per year, and cause significant damage to air, land and the health of local communities.

The UK is meant to be a global leader in tackling climate change, yet voting in favour of the World Bank loan would totally undermine this position.

There is massive opposition to the Medupi project within South Africa, as the plant will benefit big industry, with poor South Africans shouldering the cost.

Email Douglas Alexander and Ed Miliband now, to urge that the UK votes against the loan.
