Dear John Swinney MSP and Jim Mather MSP,

Scotland does not need new dirty coal-fired power stations. Proposals for a coal-fired power station at Hunterston are financially and environmentally risky as well as being unnecessary for Scotland’s energy security. I urge you to ensure that your policies lead to investment in clean green energy, not dirty coal.

Independent research has shown that Scotland can meet up to 143% of projected annual electricity demand by 2030 entirely from renewable sources– but only with the right policies leading to the right investment choices. Scotland does not need new coal or nuclear power plants for its energy security.

The Scottish Government has led the world in setting targets to cut greenhouse gas emissions.  Please don’t let unabated coal-fired power stations in Scotland jeopardise these.   I call on you to demonstrate that you intend to back up your climate change targets with policy action by setting a limit on the amount of CO2 that coal-fired power station are allowed to emit. I strongly support the idea that the Scottish Government should set an emissions performance standard of 350g of CO2 per kilowatt hour in order to ensure that emissions from all power stations are capped at a manageable level.

With the economic case for coal crumbling as energy giants like EON and DONG see the risk of proposed developments, the time is right for Scotland to introduce rules that send a strong signal to future developers and that put Scotland firmly on the path to a cleaner, greener energy future.
