Cut down carbon emissions, not trees
|
Next week, rich countries will be trying to sew up a deal to do what most of us would consider to be impossible – to turn their forests against the climate. Email Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Chris Huhne now and urge him to stop this happening. The forests of Europe and the great boreal forests that stretch across Canada and Russia could be an important part of the solution to climate change. But negotiators at the resumed UN climate talks in Bonn next week want to agree rules that allow developed countries to hide emissions from logging forests. Th current propsals would mean that increases in emissions from forests to the atmosphere could be ignored. It would significantly undermine any global climate deal if these rules are agreed in the next fortnight. We’ve teamed up with The RSPB to call on the UK to take leadership on the international stage, to become a champion for forests and persuade developed countries to agree an overall goal to reduce emissions from forestry and land use. We need to see an agreement to maintain or increase the carbon stored in forests; and we need to see the loophole that would be created by these rules closed by honestly and transparently accounting for all human-induced increases in emissions from logging forests. Email Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Chris Huhne now. It only takes two minutes. |
