Luke Sussams

I started my time at 38 Degrees back in March 2011. I have always had an interest in environmental issues from my University background in Geography. but I wanted to get a broader grasp of political systems, progressive issues and what factors help mobilise people and make campaigns successful! So 38 Degrees was the perfect place for me! So far, I have worked on the Save Our NHS campaign and hand-in events, widespread reviews of the website and the rather spectacular Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab campaign. Working in the 38 Degrees office is fantastic - a vibrant, friendly working environmental with people brought together to bring about positive, progressive change. After my time here, I am going to continue my study of climate change and environmental issues with an MA from Imperial University and intend to take my knowledge into sustainability related sectors after I graduate.

I started at 38 Degrees in April 2011, having never worked or volunteered with an organisation like it before. I previously studied History and Politics at Queen Mary, University of London. I enjoy working at 38 Degrees as I’ve met lots of lovely people, and I enjoy fast paced campaigning which has a visible impact. The main campaign that I’ve been working on here at 38 Degrees is Save Our NHS. I also enjoy working in a relatively new field of political communication (social networking/internet based movements), demonstrating how the Internet can help to democratise our existing institutions.

I began volunteering at 38 Degrees in June 2011. After studying Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent, I worked at the Ministry of Justice and Liberty. I’ve enjoyed working on the Save Our NHS campaign as this is an issue I have always been passionate about. I’m very proud of the work 38 Degrees has done on the Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab and has relished every exciting moment. I love travelling in my spare time, especially with trips to India.

I applied to volunteer for 38 Degrees because I believed they were an organisation making progressive change across the UK, effectively utilizing new technologies to run their campaigns and reach new audiences. I have since worked here since June earlier this year. I studied Drama at Goldsmith, University of London and I’ve also volunteered for Amnesty International for several years. At 38 Degrees, I have worked on the Save Our NHS campaign and the Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab campaign, both of which were incredibly effective in encouraging the powerful nature of ‘people power’.

I'm currently doing a MSc in International Public Policy at UCL, and started volunteering for 38 Degrees in June, 2011. Recently, I've been working on the Stop Murdochs Power Grab, circus animals and the Save the Save Our NHS campaign. I've really enjoyed working on the research for upcoming campaigns as well being actively involved with the media stunts on the Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab campaign.

Since starting at 38 Degrees in May, so many exciting things have happened. I’ve been working mainly on the Save Our NHS campaign and the Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab takeover, and I have seen plenty of impact the organisation can have of national policy. After graduating from Sussex University studying economics and philosophy, I am particularly interested in working within the relationship between public life, politics and the private sector.

Since I started at 38 Degrees in May I’ve gained a deeper appreciation of campaigning and the political process in general. The most exciting campaign I’ve worked on has been to Stop Murdoch’s Power Grab as we combined our conventional online action with media-orientated stunts. I love the atmosphere of the office and the team brainstorming sessions when we discuss our strategy. I’m hoping to pursue a career in policy-making and 38 Degrees has given me valuable insight into one aspect of making change happen.

Volunteer's Story

"In three months with 38 Degrees I’ve been made to feel a real part of the team. Volunteering here certainly doesn’t involve photocopying and making the tea – although hot beverages are always appreciated. I’ve had the opportunity to try out all aspects of online campaigning from researching and reporting on possible campaign ideas, using the sophisticated web toolset, and engaging with the ever increasing membership base.

"With 38 Degrees being such a young, small organisation there’s the real chance to get involved at every level, and it’s very satisfying to see the work that you do quickly being taken forward and rolled out. If there’s something you’ve seen in the paper and think is worth campaigning on the idea can be pitched, embraced and launched within the space of a couple of days.

"Volunteering here gives you the opportunity to feel at the centre of an exciting new movement for change in Britain, and pick up lots of useful skills on the way. The rest of the team are always on hand and eager to lend a helping hand and advice, so the office is always a fun place to be - everyone pitches in and helps everyone else. You can make, and take, as much as you want from time at 38 Degrees, developing the areas you are interested in, while helping to make some real positive changes to the country."
